If you've been away since opening week, welcome back. The bones haven't changed — $30M free agency, the junior draft, six months of schedule, top eight per conference, best of seven all the way out. What changed is how April reads when you're in it. Less spreadsheet. More rink.
Round previews used to dump every matchup into a long list: team, record, "at," repeat. Fine for a programmer. Rough on the eyes at 11 p.m. when you're deciding whether to spend your last cap room on a fourth-line wing or a backup who won't haunt you in Game 6.
Now you get compact matchup cards — East and West side by side, records tucked under the names, your series highlighted when you're in the dance. It's the difference between reading a phone book and reading a schedule.
When your club is alive, the main column is yours: live series score, game-by-game reveal, goals and assists when you're on the ice. The sidebar carries everyone else — other conference series, tightened up so you're not squinting at yellow on white like it's 2003.
Single-series screens — your Conference Final, your Manly Cup Final — use the full column now. No more lonely card parked on the left half while the right side begs for a purpose.
Playoff game sheets label what matters: Goal, Assisted by, Penalties, Penalty Minutes. The score line is bold. The rest has room to breathe. You can follow a six-goal track meet without losing the thread.
And yes — the reveal is slower. On purpose. A best-of-seven isn't a slot machine. Watch the series tick up game by game, or hit Skip animation if you've got somewhere to be. Your call. The skip button isn't going anywhere.
This is the one that bothered me. Conference rounds got headers and context. The Final looked like another Tuesday in February.
Not anymore. Cup Final preview gets its own presentation — navy, gold trim, both clubs with records and team ratings, your side marked, button that says Play for the Cup instead of the generic hit-the-ice line. It should feel like you earned the room. If you're there, you'll know.
The roster snapshot on junior draft day used to count heads: eleven wings, five centers, fine. Now each position shows count and strength — average O-D-S-F for your best seven wingers, best four centers, best seven defensemen, best two goalies. The minimums, not the whole junk drawer.
Handy when you're staring at two prospects and one fixes a hole while the other just adds another body to cut in training camp.
None of this changes who wins. Your $30M board still has to be right. Your draft still has to land. Your coach rating still nudges the margins. But when the bracket lights up, you shouldn't have to fight the UI to enjoy it.
